Orlando's tap water is hard. The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) reports an average hardness of 129 ppm, or 7 grains per gallon, which lands inside the "hard" band on the industry scale. Over months and years, the calcium and magnesium in that water precipitate out as scale inside your pipes, on your fixtures, and along the bottom of your water heater tank. It does not cause the sudden failures that a burst pipe does. It causes the slow ones: shorter appliance life, dropping water pressure, higher energy bills, and fixtures that look filthy no matter how hard you scrub.

Water hardness is measured in either parts per million (ppm) or grains per gallon (gpg), where 1 gpg equals about 17.1 ppm. The Water Quality Association scale is simple:
Where the minerals come from is not a mystery. Central Florida's drinking water is drawn from the Floridan Aquifer, which sits under a thick layer of limestone. Rainwater percolates down through that limestone over decades, dissolving calcium and magnesium carbonate as it goes. By the time the water reaches OUC's wells and treatment plants, it is loaded with those minerals; the treatment process handles disinfection and clarity, not hardness. Private wells that pull straight from the aquifer without municipal treatment often measure noticeably harder.
Hard water is not a burst-pipe problem. It is a slow, quiet one. When water sits in your pipes, or moves through them under heat, dissolved minerals precipitate out and stick to the pipe wall. Over years, that layer of scale narrows the inside diameter of the pipe, which restricts flow and drops pressure at the fixtures. In copper lines, the mineral layer can also accelerate pitting corrosion by trapping water against the metal.
Central Florida's building stock makes this worse in specific ways. Older galvanized steel lines, which were common in mid-century Orlando homes, corrode from the inside out under mineral-heavy water and can narrow to a fraction of their original diameter. Aging CPVC and copper get brittle or start to leak at fittings where scale has built up around the joint. If your home has recurring pinhole leaks and is more than a couple of decades old, hard water is often one of the contributors, not the sole cause but a real one. The fixture-level symptoms are the ones most homeowners notice first, and they show up long before you see any pipe damage. Look for these around your home:
Individually, each of these is a nuisance. Together, they add up to more time cleaning, more detergent bought, more appliances replaced early, and higher utility bills as your water-using equipment fights against a growing layer of scale.

Your water heater is where hard water does its most expensive damage, because the tank concentrates the problem. Cold water enters the tank, gets heated, and holds until you use it. During that hold time, dissolved calcium and magnesium precipitate out and settle at the bottom of the tank as sediment.
On a gas water heater, that layer of sediment sits between the burner (which is under the tank) and the water it is trying to heat. On an electric heater, sediment builds up around the lower heating element. Either way, the heater has to work harder and run longer to warm the water through the insulating mineral layer. You end up paying more on your energy bill for the same amount of hot water, and the heater's internal components take a beating. Homeowners often hear "popping" or "rumbling" from an older tank; that is steam bubbles forcing their way through a thick sediment layer.
Manufacturers publish expected service life for their tanks assuming reasonably clean water. In Central Florida homes without softening or filtration, most plumbers see water heaters retire earlier than that, often years before the warranty would have said they were done. Routine annual flushing helps some. A softener or whole home filter helps far more, because it addresses the cause. There are two main families of equipment for dealing with Central Florida water, and they are often confused with each other. The right one for your home depends on what you are trying to solve.
A traditional water softener uses ion exchange. Water passes through a tank of resin beads that trade the calcium and magnesium ions in the water for sodium ions from a salt reservoir. The result is water with the hardness minerals actually removed, not just suspended or coated over. Scale stops forming inside pipes, on fixtures, and inside your water heater from the day the softener is installed. Softeners require periodic salt refill and occasional regeneration cycles. Salt-free "conditioner" systems work differently: they alter the shape of mineral crystals so they cannot bond to surfaces easily, which reduces visible scale but does not remove the hardness itself. Whole home filtration is a broader category. Depending on the media used, a filter can remove chlorine (OUC disinfects primarily with ozone and carries a free-chlorine residual averaging about 1.0 ppm; per OUC, it does not use chloramines), sediment, iron, sulfur smell, and a range of contaminants. Some systems combine filtration and softening in one two-tank setup so a single install handles both scale and taste, odor, and chemical contaminants. For well water especially, filtration is often the more important piece because there is no municipal treatment upstream. The honest answer is: test the water first. A water quality test tells you exactly what your home's water contains, which drives which system makes sense. If scale is your only complaint and the water otherwise tastes fine, a softener alone often does the job. If your water tastes or smells off, or you are on a private well, filtration or a combination system is usually a better fit. A licensed plumber can pull a sample from your home, walk through the results, and match a system to what your water actually needs, rather than sell you the biggest box on the shelf.

If you are seeing scale on fixtures, cloudy dishes, dry skin and hair, or a water heater that is aging quickly, a softener will pay for itself over time in fixture and appliance life. Homes on well water almost always benefit. If your OUC-served home is new and shows no scale, a softener is a preventative upgrade rather than a fix.
