Yes. Central Florida groundwater is drawn through limestone, which leaves it high in dissolved calcium and magnesium — the minerals that make water "hard." Hard water is not a health risk, but it is hard on plumbing. As water moves through pipes, fixtures and water heaters, those minerals precipitate out and bond to interior surfaces as scale. The buildup is gradual and invisible until efficiency drops or a fixture stops performing. A water test tells you exactly how hard your supply is before you decide whether treatment is worth it.

The most common signs are mineral deposits and white crusting on taps and shower heads, scale buildup inside kettles and dishwashers, soap and detergent that will not lather properly, spotting or film left on dishes and glassware, stiff laundry, dry skin after showering, a water heater that takes longer to recover or runs noisier than it used to, and water pressure that has slowly declined as scale narrows the inside of supply lines. Any one of these on its own may be something else — several together usually point to hardness.

Scale is an insulator. When it coats the inside of a water heater tank or the element, the heater has to work longer to reach the same temperature, which shows up as slower recovery and higher energy use. The same buildup narrows supply lines, clogs aerators and shower heads, and shortens the life of dishwashers and washing machines. Softening the water does not undo damage already done, but it stops new scale forming — which is why it is usually worth pairing a softener with a water heater flush, so the equipment starts clean.

Sizing depends on how hard your water actually is and how much of it your household uses — which comes down to the number of occupants, bathrooms and water-using appliances. An undersized unit regenerates constantly and wears out early; an oversized one wastes salt and water. Correct sizing is the single biggest factor in how well a softener performs and how long it lasts.

A water softener is not the same thing as a filter, and the two solve different problems. A softener targets hardness specifically — it removes the dissolved calcium and magnesium that form scale, protecting pipes, fixtures and appliances.
