Common Plumbing Myths Most Homeowners Fall for Every Time
As a homeowner, there is so much to know. You’ve got to know a little bit about heating, cooling, general repair and of course you need to know about your plumbing. The problem is that many myths are circulating about plumbing, which a surprising number of people believe. You are doing yourself a disservice as a homeowner if you don’t have your facts in order when it comes to your plumbing. You’ll waste either money, time or both. And that’s valuable. Here are the most common myths and the truth behind them.
Water Heaters Don’t Explode, do They?
You better believe that they do. A water heater that has a T&P (temperature and pressure) valve that is blocked or damaged is a ticking time bomb. This important valve releases steam as the water heater heats the water. If the valve is broken or if there is something in front of it (i.e. storage in your basement) blocking air flow, then that pressure can’t get released.
Check out your water heater and make sure that the area around it is clear. Make sure that valve isn’t damaged.
My Water is Draining. I Don’t Have a Clog
Wrong. If your water is draining, but is slow to drain, it is entirely possible that there is a clog that will get much bigger (and more troublesome) as time goes on. If your sinks, tubs or showers are slow when they drain, or if they bubble when you turn on a faucet or flush the toilet, it is worth exploring clog removal options.
A Plunger is All I Need to Fix a Clog
While the use of a plumber is not in question, it is not always the appropriate tool for the job at hand. If the clog has been formed by something dense or hard (like a tree root), a plunger won’t be strong enough. In some cases, you can use a plumbing snake to drill through the clog. In more severe cases you need the high-pressure spray of hydro jetting.
Start with a plunger and if that doesn’t work, call the plumber for help with the other options.
Creatures Won’t Swim up my Pipes
Unfortunately, a host of creatures can make their way up your pipes and into your home. Common pipe swimming creatures include snakes, squirrels, frogs and rats. Needless to say, this is not a problem that you want to encounter.
A quick and easy solution to this is to install a flap over the waste tube in your toilet. It will block entry for those creatures.
It’s Only a Leaky Faucet
It doesn’t take a whole lot of water to create a lot of damage. A leaky faucet can rupture into something much larger. When you note a leaky faucet do yourself a favor and get the wrench out. A few minutes and an easy DIY can probably fix the problem before it gets bigger.
Bottom line, don’t wait for pesky plumbing problems to get bigger. It’s more inconvenient and more expensive. Call Shamrock Plumbing & Drain Cleaning today at (407) 305-6183 for service in Orlando, FL.
