How To Drain Your Water Heater

A water heater is a luxury associated with modern day living. Without a water heater, many homeowners would be lost.

Thinking about how often the home's water heater is actually used probably does not happen all that often, but if it stops functioning properly, it becomes blatantly apparent that the heater is necessary in everyday tasks such as bathing, washing dishes, and even washing clothes.

Why Should You Drain Your Water Heater?

Although it is not absolutely necessary to drain your Orlando home's water heater on a frequent basis (such as every couple months), it is necessary to drain your home's water heater yearly or bi-yearly.

Draining your home's water heater has a couple of different benefits. These benefits include prolonging the life of the water heater, preventing unnecessary repairs from clogs, ensures the heater is working efficiently.

What Happens If You Do Not Routinely Drain Your Water Heater?

If you do not routinely drain your home's water heater many different bad things can happen. One of the first things that you will notice as a homeowner is that your electric bill goes up. If your home's water heater is not drained and clean, it will not efficiently run making it work harder and use more energy to heat water for the home.

Another issue that is commonly associated with water heaters that are not routinely drained and cleaned is clogs. Sediment that has accumulated within the heater can cause the heater's drain valves to clog requiring maintenance to properly drain.

How To Drain Your Water Heater

You can easily drain your home's water heather in a couple steps. The first step to draining the heater is completely turning off the water supply.

The next step is to turn the heater itself off. If electric water heaters are not turned off before draining the heating elements can burn out without the proper level of water within the heater.

Once the heater has been turned off, the next step is to find the drain valve and attach a hose. When this has been achieved, open a hot water tap somewhere within the Orlando home as close to the heater itself as possible.

After a hot water tap has been turned on, open the drain valve on the water heater itself. Allow the unit to drain. Once it has completely drained, briefly allow cold water into the unit to stir up any remaining sediment, and repeat draining process.

Once the water heater has been drained and is sediment free, you simply close the heater's drain valve, refill the heater and turn the power back on.
