5 Home Winterization Tips
Even though in Orlando it doesn't reach the freezing cold temperatures, it's still good to keep top of mind on these aspects of winterization.
While everyone enjoys summer and its warm temperatures, eventually the seasons change and colder weather arrives. For many people, this signals the time when they need to make sure their Orlando homes are able to withstand the harsh realities of winter.
Inspecting pipes, guttering, roofs, and other parts of a Orlando home for damage may be time-consuming, but it can pay off by saving money as well as the inconvenience of having something break down at the worst possible time. But by following some simple home winterization tips, most people can avoid the unexpected annoyances and repair bills that follow.
Inspect Water Valves and Shut Off Main Valve
Prior to cold weather, all of a home's water valves should be checked to make sure they are in good shape. Because the valves are not used very often, they may become rusted or have corrosion on them.
This can cause them to break or fail to turn, which can lead to excessive water damage if the water needs to be turned off when pipes burst. Plumbers can inspect the valves and repair or replace them as needed, depending upon the damage they have.
If a home is going to be empty for an extended period of time, the main water valve should be turned off to ensure water cannot leak in the event something happens when nobody is home.
Check Exposed Pipes
In older homes as well as garages, attics, basements, and crawlspaces, many pipes are installed on the outside of a wall. This can leave them exposed to colder temperatures, which in some cases can lead to them freezing and bursting.
Prior to winter, all of these pipes should be inspected by a plumber for any rust or cracks they may have.
In addition, any pipes in danger of freezing should be covered with heating tape or Styrofoam pipe insulation, and in some cases temperature-controlled heating cables should be laid directly on the pipes to prevent freezing.
Inspect Outside Faucets and Water Heater
Outside faucets are very prone to freezing during the winter, which can lead to pipes bursting inside walls and causing extensive inside and outside damage.
Water heaters should also be inspected to ensure their thermostat, pressure relief valve, and other components are working properly. Since water from the heaters is extremely hot, a licensed plumber should do the inspection to make sure it is done in a safe manner.
