Stains on Tile and How to Remove Them
Why Are There Water Stains on my Tub and Tile? How Can I Remove These Stains?
Many people encounter this common problem: despite regular scrubbing, their tub and tile never quite looks clean. Over time it gets worse and worse until it becomes obvious that water stains are the problem.
What Causes Water Stains?
Your tub and tile is constantly exposed to water. If you have water with minerals in it, often called hard water, you will first see a thin powdery film on your bathroom and kitchen fixtures.
Over time, this turns to a scaly and discolored residue that requires a great deal of elbow grease to remove.
There are a few different kinds of water stains. Many minerals in hard water leave a white film, while iron in water will leave red deposits instead. If left untreated, these water stains can leave your tub, tile, and sinks looking unsightly and unclean. Hard water can even make your clothes and dishes look dirty over time, and cause long term damage to your plumbing.
How to Remove Water Stains
There are several ways to remove water stains. Many people simply scrub and scrub with an abrasive cleaner until they are gone. While this is effective, it will be destructive to your tub and tile over time. Other people use ammonia, vinegar, and other corrosive cleaners which also can leave damage when used over the long term.
In addition to removing the hard water deposits that are visible, it is important to have a plumber inspect your plumbing on an annual basis to check your pipes and appliances for deposits and the resulting damage. The same scales that form on your tub are forming even faster inside your plumbing.
Preventing Water Stains
There are a few ways to prevent hard water deposits on your tile and tub. There are sprays that can be used after showering or bathing that will prevent the minerals from sticking to your tile and porcelain.
Many people, however, prefer to get a water softening system installed. Not only will this prevent water stains from forming on your tub and tile, but it will prevent damage to plumbing and appliances as well.
Many areas have hard water with high mineral levels. By dealing with this problem proactively, you can remove hard water stains and prevent them from coming back.
