Sump Pump Service Benefits
What is a Sump Pump?
A sump pump is a mechanical device (a pump) which pulls excess water away from your home and drains it away from your foundation, or deposits it into your sewer system instead of allowing it to flood your basement when rain, melting snow, ground water, or run-off saturate the ground around your foundation and try to seep inside.
A sump pump is assurance that night or day, while you are at home or away, you have a fighting chance of preventing flooding and keeping your basement dry, safe, and sound.
Benefits of a Sump Pump
Mold and Mildew will be kept away. This makes the air you breathe much better for your health. Insects, animals, and bacteria that are attracted to wet, dank environments will be thwarted. Structural damage caused by standing water can be minimized or averted.
Why You Need a Sump Pump in Your Home
It will save you money. Repair and replacement costs for floods can run into thousands of dollars for everything from carpet and furniture to tools and appliances.
French drains (the piping around the foundation) can become overwhelmed by extreme rain or melting snow, and a sump pump is an additional precaution against flooding. You will have peace knowing that you won't have to deal with a flood surprise.
Sump Pump Selection
You may choose between a sump pump that is on a pedestal, which keeps the sump motor above water, and is activated when a floating piece on a metal rod is buoyed high enough by the water collected to turn on the switch. This then siphons the water into a pipe and then into your sewage system.
Alternatively, you may choose a pump which submerses its motor in the water with a plastic piece surrounding the switch.
A filter prevents debris from being sucked in, but the water is able to be suctioned out once the plastic piece is buoyed to a high enough level by the water in the sump. The water then drains out of the basement.
