Are you seeing a spike in your water bill? Sometimes a higher water bill may be because of a leak in your plumbing. How can you tell whether or not you have a plumbing leak and where it might be?
Try these three steps:
1. Turn off all the water in your house.
2. Remove the water meter lid.
3. Write down what it says at the beginning and at the end of 10 minutes.
If the meter has moved, then you do have a leak somewhere in your house.
Now the task is finding where that leak is located.
Toilet leaks are the most common, accounting for up to 300 gallons of lost water daily, and can cost you up to $500 a year. To check your toilet for leaks, just lift the toilet tank lid and place two dye tablets or 10 to 15 drops of food coloring in the tank. If the water in the toilet bowl turns the color of the dye, then you have a leak.
Dripping faucets can be another source of leakage and water-waste. Many times the drippy faucet is located outside where a hose might be attached. Fixing your dripping faucets can save you a lot of money each month. Make sure you check every faucet for leaks inside and outside, by the laundry and that extra bathroom. And it’s a good idea to check under your sinks as well for any pipe leakage.
If you can’t find the leak, it’s a good idea to call your local plumber who can easily address the issue saving you time and money in the long run.
Check to see if your city offers a discount for collecting storm water. Even if your city doesn’t offer a storm-water management discount on your water bill, it’s still a good idea to redirect storm-water runoff away from your drains and toward the lawn and garden area using extra gutter attachments, or collect the water in rain barrels so that you can use that water and again save money on your water bill.
